Looking good! Finally, we can make a similar adjustment for each image, so that there is a thin white border around the photos. Now there’s white space on either side of our collage. In Column 2, we will bump up the Right padding to 30px as well. By increasing the padding to 30px, we create a nice strip of white space on the left of our collage, similar to the original Cook Smart one. In Column 1, we’ll want to adjust the padding on the left only. Turn on the “More options” slider under Padding. We can adjust padding on any piece on content in BEE by clicking on it and navigating to the Content menu that appears on the right. To add white space on either side of our collage, we’ll click the content row (the blank space to the right or left of our collage), so we can adjust both sides at once. The photo collage looks great, but we can more closely mirror the layout of Cook Smart’s collage by adjusting the white space between the images and along the outside borders on the right and left. We can continue to add the images on at a time, dropping each one into place, until all four are in place. The content placeholders automatically adjust in size to fit the height of each image, making it super easy to maintain the look and feel of the Cook Smart collage. Now we’ll drag them in one at a time into our placeholders. We took Cook Smarts’ single image collage and saved each portion individually so we have four separate images to work with. Now we have a placeholder for our content.įrom the Content menu, we can drag and drop in four image placeholders, two in each column. From the Structure menu, we’ll drag one in. While so far our email is a single-column layout, we’ll need to add a two-column structure to arrange our photos. What we need to do next is set up the structure of the photo collage. (For tips on how to make these formatting changes, check out our post on modular design and HTML colors in email). We also formatted our bulletproof CTA button. Starting with a basic single-column layout, we brought in the logo as an image for the header, formatted the email background color to gray and the content background to white, and copy-and-pasted the text into the email. We recreated the basic structure of the Cook Smart email in the BEE editor to get started. Tutorial: How to build a responsive photo collage Here’s our quick video recap of today’s workshop: If you make a collage that’s a single image, you’ll have to do it in Photoshop or a similar program, but you can make a totally responsive photo collage entirely in our drag-and-drop BEE email editor, without needing to pre-format. It depends on the amount of detail you want to maintain and if losing that detail due to scaling is okay for the purposes of your message. Sometimes, not having a responsive collage is okay-you might want the images in your collage to remain in place, even on a small device. The text doesn’t get any larger (it’s actually a bit hard to read), and the photo collage is all one image, so it scales down significantly to fit the screen’s width. What a great way to get readers to tap “Yes, subscribe me to this list”!īut when we checked out the email on iPhone, we noticed it wasn’t responsive. The photo collage serves as a delicious preview for the meal plans to come. The original, high-quality images made our mouths water. After signing up for their mailing list, we received this confirmation email. One of them came from Cook Smarts, a company that emails cooking lessons and recipes. Many subscription confirmation emails look the same, but recently we took a look at how some brands are breaking the mold by giving subscribers a warm welcome and standing out from the crowd (on that, see Design a standout subscription confirmation email). Inspiration for our photo collage in email Today we’ll show you how to build a beautiful, responsive photo collage in email so you can design a message that looks awesome and converts. With great stock photos now easier to get than ever, even free of charge (we particularly like Pexels), you’re in the driver’s seat. With only a few seconds to capture subscribers’ attention, photography is a great way to make an impact (especially if you’re in the food or fashion industries, where product pictures can make or break a campaign).Ī photo collage in email is the perfect way to display stunning images and tell a compelling visual story while avoiding the pitfalls of a single-image email. Readers increasingly scan emails on mobile devices while they’re on the go. Photo collages (also called photo galleries) are a great way to add visual muscle to your email campaigns.

Her Malaysian heritage came through loudly in her chiffon cakes and pandan-infused pineapple tarts, which we often placed on the counter alongside our mince pies around Christmas. From Australia, she brought wonderfully crumbly and sharp yo-yo cookies, her billowy powder puff cakes that are just impossible to put down, and her chocolate cake, which is the cake grown-up kids dream of, and which newspaper once called "the world's best" (pictured). Officially, she's a "product developer" for Ottolenghi, but that doesn't really do her role justice her originality and perfectionism have had an enormous impact on what we do. The combination of the child whose enthusiasm never wanes and the nerd who won't rest until it's perfect led to some pretty sweet results. What we shared was the notion that there is no upper limit to the number of times you can bake a cake or the amount of thought that can go into the components of a tart in order to get it just right that you can discuss the minutiae of a chocolate ice-cream or a nut brittle as if the fate of the entire universe rests on the conversation, without worrying for a second that this may be, just maybe, a tiny bit over the top.īaking brought out both our inner kids – and, also, our inner geeks, with all the precise measuring, timing and weighing that informed all of our chats. I finally realised that it was Helen's restlessness and her insatiable drive for perfection that had brought her to me. It took seeing Helen at work – first on the savoury side of the kitchen, then on the pastry side and then, later still, spending much of her time dreaming up pastries, cakes and all manner of sweet things for the company – for the penny to drop. I heard her story but couldn't quite understand what drives such a star to leave behind a very successful career – Helen is both a talented pastry chef and a successful psychotherapist – in a very sunny Melbourne in favour of a rather elusive future in a rather grey London. I remember meeting for the first time outside one of our shops, big meringue piles looming above us. Helen is an old friend and colleague who came to the Ottolenghi shops fresh off the proverbial boat from Australia, back in 2006. This one hasn't risen properly, the other bowed around the centre, an icing has split during its application, a sabayon lost its air, a sorbet failed to churn, a sugar syrup crystallised, a cookie crumbled and so on and on and on. Helen Goh then walks through our front door like a gust of wind or, rather, an overzealous dusting of icing sugar, carrying more cartons than humanly possible and, before even setting them down, begins apologising for all the things that went wrong with her cakes. My husband, Karl, looks out the window of our first-floor West London flat an expression of clear foreboding appears on his face and then, very quietly, he says, "Helen's here – with her cakes." Here is an image that I can't shake: It's a Sunday afternoon, around four, probably. Jump straight to the chocolate cake recipe.Meet Helen Goh, the Melbourne woman Ottolenghi is sweet on. King Umberto II of the royal house of Savoy was deposed, and the male descendants of the family were exiled. The final tally: 12,717,923 votes for the Republic and 10,719,284 against. After the end of World War II, the Italian people went to the ballot boxes to choose the type of government they wanted. On June 2 and 3, 1946, they voted to end the monarchy that had ruled their country for 85 years. The nationwide festivities on June 2 commemorate a much more recent event. The electrical discharges at the mastheads of ships during storms came to be called "Saint Elmo's Fire” ( fuoco di Sant’Erasmo), a sign of the martyr’s protection. A bluish flame appeared on the top of the pyre and was interpreted as the saint’s soul ascending to heaven. In the grisliest account, Erasmo’s stomach was slit open and his intestines wound around a windlass, a type of winch used to hoist an anchor on a ship.įinally Erasmo was burned alive. Other torturers plucked out his teeth with pincers, scraped his skin with an iron wool carder and pulled out his eyes with their fingers. Through it all he remained calm, “thanking and loving God." Then lightning struck and electrocuted everyone around him.Ĭontinuing to preach the Gospel, Erasmo was again captured and tortured, this time with burning oil poured into his mouth and a searing hot metal cloak wrapped around him. In the late third century, during the Roman persecution of Christians, Erasmo was jailed, "besprinkled.with foulness,” beaten with leaden mauls until his veins burst, thrown into a pit of snakes and worms and covered with boiling oil and sulfur. To find out more, I went to Wikipedia, which presents the gruesome suffering of Sant’Erasmo (known in English-speaking lands as Saint Elmo) as the stuff of legend. Several of his fellow Portercolesi added that Erasmo was a martyr who once saved a ship of local sailors from a tempest at sea. "Who was this Saint Erasmo?" I asked a friend born on June 2 in Porto Ercole and, of course, named Erasmo. June 2 is also la festa di Sant’Erasmo, the patron saint of the ancient fishing port and of all mariners. In addition to concerts, a rowing race, dances and a solemn mass, Porto Ercole honors its saint with a procession of his relics to the sea, a lighted boat parade and a spectacular display of fireworks. Throughout Italy the Festa della Repubblica (Festival of the Republic) on June 2 commemorates the day in 1946 when the Italian people voted for a republic as their national form of government. Our adopted seaside town of Porto Ercole on the western coast of Tuscany has a double reason to celebrate. It is the commitment to the Warbirds and the stories behind their return to flight that are as engaging as the sight of seeing the beautiful machines soar among the clouds once more and all those stories can be found here. Obstacles to be overcome to return a Warbird to flight have included fixing a troublesome elevator pushrod, replacing cockpit cowl rails, or stripping off a worn-out faded livery and replacing it with a fresh coat of paint. Often the key areas for these restorations are missing engines or control system parts, wing or tail repair, a need for new nose and main gear tyres and seats for the pilots and navigator. The stories can be as simple as replacing damaged skin fabric and lubricating mechanical systems back to a functional state, which was what was needed for an RAF Westland Lysander but they can be as challenging as a decades long, slow search for parts and reconstruction which was necessary for a Royal Australian Air Force Curtiss P-40N Kittyhawk which had crashed on Rattlesnake Island, just off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The committed individuals and companies that restore these Warbirds have a story to tell in the great lengths they will go to in the hope of seeing these aircraft fly again. Whether the airframe to be restored was found in the Pacific’s Solomon Islands or had been retired to a safe hangar, the challenge can be a full bottom up reconstruction or trying to find a missing engine. When he arrived in France and set up his laboratory, Beaux set out, quite literally, to bottle it. “I always remembered this characteristic smell.” A mixture of jasmine and other florals with the snowy aldehydes of the Arctic Circle was the inspiration for Chanel No. when the lakes and rivers exude a particular freshness,” Beaux explained in a speech he gave in 1946. The crisp odor of the frozen desert landscape stuck with him: “In the northern countries of Europe, beyond the Arctic Circle. Difficult as it was, the journey also inspired something in Beaux. He took a perilous route, “crossing the snowy tundra of the Kola Peninsula inside the Arctic Circle,” Schlögel writes. Beaux, knowing his life was in danger for having worked for the newly deposed - and executed - Romanov family, fled back to France. Under the new regime, luxury products were despised for their associations with the uber-rich, and “perfume was branded the very epitome of a bourgeois lifestyle,” Schlögel writes. When he returned home, the Russian Revolution - in which the Bolsheviks overthrew the monarchy - had begun. During World War I, Beaux left to fight alongside the French in Europe. To make it easy for you to place the middle pieces on the board, you have to pay attention to the shape of the pieces. Remember to use the pieces you already placed as a guide. Look closely at the border and find the color or design that matches a pile. If you find pieces that you can’t add to any group, you can place them in a “random pile.” Group light-colored and dark-colored pieces together so you will have an idea of where a puzzle piece will go. Most of the puzzle pieces will have this quality, making it challenging for puzzlers to find their rightful place on the board.īut, if you have already grouped the pieces together by their color or design, it will be easy for you to complete the puzzle. The middle pieces are the bits with either knobs or holes on all four sides. By the time you’re done, you will have a frame. While doing this step, you will begin to see patterns in the edge pieces. These pieces will make up the sides of the puzzle. Look for pieces with one straight edge and three sides with knobs or holes. Using these as starting points, you can begin building the border of the image. This means they will be easy to spot from your pile.Īfter finding the four pieces, you can place them at the corners of the frame. These bits will have two straight edges perpendicular to each other and two sides with either a knob or a hole. If you have a four-sided picture, which is the most common type of jigsaw puzzle, you will have four corner pieces. Your first placements should be the corner pieces. You should also group the pieces that do not fit with any of your piles into a separate pile. The next thing to do is sort the remaining pieces by their color. Collect the corner pieces first and start from there.Īfter separating the pieces, you must have all straight edge pieces in a pile. On im-a-puzzle, this is done for you automaticallyĪfter that step, you must separate the middle pieces from the pieces that make the picture’s border. Although this step sounds tedious, it can help you put together the puzzle more easily. Turn all pieces over so the side with the picture is facing upward. When starting a jigsaw puzzle, the first thing you should do is to spread out the pieces on a flat surface.
